T

he New York Tri State Chapter of the Bishops’ High School was inaugurated as an association in 1988. Thereafter, the founding members continued to have meetings on a monthly basis to determine the activities of the chapter. Currently, a core group of about 15 to 20 members meet once a month to discuss issues pertaining to the educational and social needs of Bishops’ High School in Guyana. In addition, we reflect on situations that affect us in our own personal lives and support each other whenever there is a need. Our meetings are conducted in a pleasant and orderly fashion.

In keeping with the mission of all the alumni chapters, the BHS NY Tri-State Chapter has been actively raising funds to send to the school in Guyana. This has been accomplished by hosting dances and an annual spring luncheon. We have teamed up with Queens College Alumni Association to host a Pre-Labor Day Bar-B-Q, an event that should not-to-be-missed. This event is one of our greatest fundraiser surpassing our annual spring luncheon by margins.

Thus far, the funds have been used to furnish two classrooms with new desks and chairs, provided musical instruments for the music program, supplies for the home economics room, money for Speech Day Awards and a yearly amount for the principal to use as she sees fit. Guided by the principal’s wish list, barrels and boxes of scientific supplies and books donated by individual alumni have been shipped to the school.

BHSNYTSC, a not-for-profit organization, has also embarked on local projects. We felt the need to assist local charities wherever we see fit. As an organization that cares, we have begun an annual contribution to Bishop Hucles Nursing home in Brooklyn. In addition, the organization has donated toys and books to children in challenged economic area through charitable organizations in the city.

At Christmas, we fulfill the wishes of one of the many “Dear Santa” letters sent to the Post Office, focusing on those with educational supply needs.

We have a mailing list of over 150 names; and we are seeking members with new ideas and vibrant energy. We encourage other alumni to mail their membership dues even if they cannot attend the monthly meetings regularly.

At Christmas, we have a special treat for the entire the family and friends of alumni to experience with “The Secret Santa game” during our annual Christmas party.
